Best Ryokans in Nara

Ryokan Kankaso claims second place through its magnificent garden, which is genuinely the most beautiful private landscape in Nara's ryokan scene. Every room overlooks a carefully curated arrangement of stone lanterns, moss beds, and water features that transforms with each season into entirely different visual experiences. The property occupies a quiet residential pocket of Naramachi, and stepping through the wooden gate transports you from urban bustle into a world of bird song and trickling water. The communal natural hot spring bath features cedar walls that release calming aromatics when heated, creating a sensory experience that modern spa hotels cannot replicate. The multi-course kaiseki dinner is served in private dining rooms where seasonal presentations are genuinely edible works of art. For travelers who believe a ryokan garden should be the centerpiece of the experience, Kankaso delivers beyond expectations.
